VW and Audi 2.0 TDI — EGR and particulate filter in practice
The 2.0 TDI engines from the EA189 and EA288 families sit in enormous numbers of Volkswagens, Audis, Škodas and SEATs. They are solid engines, but at higher mileages the same components keep coming back — almost always on the exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter side.
EGR: what the system does and why it fouls up
The EGR valve returns part of the exhaust gas to the intake to lower combustion temperature and with it NOx emissions. Those gases contain soot, which combines with oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation into a sticky deposit. Over time the valve becomes stiff or sticks.
- Valve stuck open: too much exhaust gas in the engine, so too little oxygen — noticeable power loss, black smoke, rough idle.
- Valve stuck closed: NOx values rise, producing a fault code and often limp mode.
- EGR cooler: leaks occur here too. Losing coolant without an obvious puddle belongs with this — see coolant disappearing with no visible leak.
The particulate filter: the second half of the same story
EGR and DPF are connected: an EGR passing too much gas produces more soot, and that soot ends up in the filter. If you mainly drive short distances the filter never gets a chance to regenerate and the process accelerates itself. The full explanation is in particulate filter not regenerating.
What you notice before the light comes on
- Less smooth acceleration, especially from low revs.
- A higher idle speed lasting longer, or a fan running on after driving: a regeneration was in progress.
- Rising fuel consumption without your journeys having changed.
- A faint sooty smell after a drive.
What helps to postpone it
- A longer drive regularly. Twenty minutes of steady driving gives the system the chance to regenerate.
- Oil to specification and on interval. For diesels with a particulate filter, low-ash (low-SAPS) oil is not a luxury but a requirement; the wrong oil fills the filter with ash faster.
- Don't leave faults unattended. A leaking injector or a faulty sensor fills the filter more quickly.
What we don't do
We do not remove particulate filters and do not programme out EGR systems. That makes the vehicle non-compliant and causes a problem at the inspection. What we do: clean where that makes sense, replace where necessary, and above all remove the cause so it doesn't return within a year.
Our approach
We read out the engine control unit with brand-specific equipment and look at live values: EGR position against the requested position, air mass, soot loading and the history of successful and aborted regenerations. That separates a fouled valve from a sensor reading incorrectly — and prevents an expensive EGR being replaced when the cause lay elsewhere.
