Particulate filter not regenerating — four causes in order
The particulate filter traps soot and periodically burns it off at high temperature — that is called regeneration. When that process fails, the filter slowly fills up: first a warning light appears, then a power limitation. This is the order in which we tackle it.
First: how regeneration works
While driving, the filter gradually fills with soot. The control unit tracks how much and then starts a regeneration: by injecting extra fuel, exhaust temperature rises to several hundred degrees and the soot burns off to ash. That process needs time and reasonably constant load — for example twenty minutes of steady driving on a main road or motorway.
Cause 1 — Too many short trips
By far the most common. If you mainly drive short distances in town, the car simply never completes a regeneration: it starts one and you switch the engine off. Every interrupted attempt leaves the filter fuller than before. A diesel that only does a five-kilometre commute is a filter that will clog in time.
Cause 2 — Regeneration starts but keeps getting aborted
Recognisable by: a higher idle speed, a fan that keeps running hard, an unusual smell, or a car that stays hot and "runs on" after a trip. Those are signs a regeneration was in progress. Switch the engine off mid-way and the attempt doesn't count. If you notice this, deliberately drive on for another fifteen minutes without stopping.
Cause 3 — The system is measuring incorrectly
Regeneration depends on sensors: the differential pressure sensor across the filter, temperature sensors, air mass meter, and data from the EGR and injection systems. If one of those reads incorrectly, the control unit either thinks the filter is empty (and never starts) or hopelessly full (and blocks the process). This calls for reading out and comparing live values, not guessing.
Cause 4 — The filter really is saturated
Above a certain soot level the control unit blocks regeneration entirely: burning off too much soot at once could melt the filter. Then a forced regeneration through the diagnostic equipment is needed, or — with too much ash residue — cleaning or replacement. Also important: with an engine consuming oil or a leaking injector, the filter fills up again and again. Then the filter is the symptom, not the disease.
What not to do
Having the filter removed. It sounds like a cheap fix and it is a bad idea: the car no longer meets emissions requirements, which causes a problem at the APK, and it is not a legal route. We don't do this.
Driving on with the light on. At some point the car goes into limp mode with severely reduced power. That is exactly when the bill gets bigger.
What we do
We read out soot loading, differential pressure and temperature values, check how many successful and aborted regenerations are in the history, and assess whether the cause is in the filter itself or upstream of it. Where possible we start a forced regeneration; where that is no longer possible, we discuss cleaning or replacement with a quote up front.
