Vibration when braking — discs, hubs or suspension?
Braking from higher speed, the steering wheel starts to shake, or the pedal pulses under your foot. Annoying, but above all informative: where you feel the vibration tells you fairly precisely where the cause sits.
Where do you feel it?
- In the steering wheel — almost always the front discs. The front wheels steer, so irregularities there reach the wheel directly.
- In the pedal and the floor, while the steering stays calm — that points to the rear discs.
- Throughout the car, even without braking — then braking is not the cause but the trigger: think wheel imbalance or play in the suspension.
What is usually going on
Distorted or unevenly worn discs. A brake disc should be flat to within hundredths of a millimetre. Strong heating followed by rapid cooling — braking downhill, then through a puddle — can distort it. Every revolution then presses the pad slightly harder or softer: that is what you feel as pulsing.
Rust and pad material build-up. If a car stands still for a long time, the discs rust over. Usually that wears off again, but not always evenly — especially on cars coming out of a long standstill or suspension.
A hub that does not run true. Rust or dirt between hub and disc makes even a brand-new disc run out of true. That is why we clean the mating face on fitting; it saves a second visit.
Play in the suspension. With play in ball joints, control arm bushes or a wheel bearing, a small irregularity is amplified into a clear vibration. Fitting new discs then only treats the symptom.
A seized caliper: the version with side effects
Does one wheel also run hot, is there a sharp smell after driving, or does the car pull to one side under braking? Then a caliper or guide pin may be seized. The pad keeps dragging — costing fuel, ruining the disc and making braking uneven.
Why not to leave it
Vibration under braking is rarely acutely dangerous, but it always progresses: a slightly distorted disc becomes a disc that must be replaced, and the pad wears unevenly along with it. Reduced braking performance is also an APK rejection point — and the brake tester measures exactly what you feel in the pedal.
What we do
