Squealing brakes — when is it harmless and when not?
Squealing brakes are irritating, but not always a defect. The difference is in the pattern: does it squeal only in the morning, only under light braking, or always? And above all: does it go away?
Harmless: morning rust
After a night in the rain or in damp air, a thin layer of rust forms on the discs. The first few brake applications scrub it away — often with a rasping or squealing noise. If it is gone after two or three stops, nothing is wrong. This also applies to cars that have stood still for a while.
Harmless: dust and grit
A small stone or brake dust between pad and disc gives a scraping noise that disappears by itself over time. If it persists, it is worth a look — sometimes something is jammed in the caliper.
Serious: the wear indicator
Most brake pads have a metal tab that starts scraping once the pad is nearly finished. The noise is a constant, high-pitched squeal while braking that does not fade and returns daily. This is the system working as designed: it warns you before damage occurs. Book an appointment — not an emergency, but work for the short term.
Have it checked now: grinding
If it sounds like metal on metal, low and coarse rather than high and squealing, the pad is completely worn and the backing plate is running against the disc. From that moment braking performance drops and the disc is being damaged too. Driving on turns a pad change into a pad and disc change.
Other noises while braking
- Squealing that stops the moment you brake — then it is probably not the brakes but a belt or a bearing.
- Vibration or pulsing with it — see vibration when braking.
- Pulling to one side — possibly a seized caliper. This is safety work.
- Heat and a sharp smell after a drive — a caliper or guide pin not moving freely.
Why cheap pads squeal more often
Brake pads are not generic parts: composition, hardness and the anti-squeal shims differ considerably. Pads with the wrong composition for your car can brake perfectly well and still sing. We fit pads matched to your car and treat the contact faces on fitting — in practice that resolves most squealing complaints.
And the APK
Squealing itself is not a rejection point, but a pad that is too thin or uneven braking performance certainly is. The brake tester measures that objectively — see the ten most common failure points.
