Škoda and SEAT 1.5 TSI — hesitation at low revs
The 1.5 TSI is an economical, modern petrol engine found in Škoda, SEAT, Volkswagen and Audi. On a proportion of cars — particularly from the earliest model years — one complaint clearly stands out: hesitation or juddering at low revs, exactly in town traffic.
What it comes down to
The pattern is recognisable: you pull away slowly or drive in a low gear with little throttle, and the engine responds with a brief hesitation or a judder. On the motorway there is nothing wrong. The behaviour is stronger with a cold engine, in traffic and when pulling away from rest on a slope.
The technical background, briefly
The 1.5 TSI is designed to run extremely economically. To that end it runs a very lean mixture at low load and uses cylinder deactivation: with little power demanded, two cylinders are shut down. Both make the engine management more sensitive to small deviations. Add one more factor — deposits, a sensor reading slightly off, a valve moving stiffly — and you notice it precisely in that region.
What we check in practice
- Software level of the engine control unit. Updated control programmes have become available for this engine type over time. We check whether the car is on the current level; with this specific complaint that is often the first sensible step. Where that has to run through the brand, we say so honestly.
- Intake deposits. With direct injection no petrol passes the intake valves to wash them clean; carbon build-up is a real factor at higher mileages.
- Ignition. Spark plugs past their interval cause the first problems exactly in the lean, low-rev region.
- Live measured values. Fuel trims, lambda values and boost pressure at low load: that is where you see a system working close to its edge.
What you can do yourself
- Keep to the spark plug intervals. On this engine, postponing is noticeable in how it drives.
- Don't habitually labour the engine at very low revs with lots of throttle — that is exactly the situation where the behaviour appears.
- Quality fuel makes more difference on lean-tuned engines than on older types.
- Have it assessed if it worsens. Juddering that increases is something else than the known behaviour; then we look further.
When it is not this
If the juddering comes with an illuminated engine warning light, with power loss across the whole rev range or with the car in limp mode, we are talking about something else. We describe that split in car won't pull.

We read out with brand-specific equipment, check the software level and the live values at low load, and assess ignition and intake. If an update or adjustment is needed that can only run through the brand, we say so — that is more honest than replacing parts to try something.
