Servicing by number plate — what the calculator can and can't do

Published on · 4 minute read

Enter your number plate and see straight away what your service costs. That is how our service calculator works. But a number plate doesn't tell everything about a car. Below you read honestly what the calculator can do, what it can't, and what to do if something doesn't match.

What the number plate does tell

With your number plate we look up the make, model, type, year, engine capacity, power, fuel and the expiry date of your APK in the RDW open data. That data is reliable, and for many cars it is enough to find the right parts.

Your number plate only goes to the RDW and into the WhatsApp message you send yourself. We don't store it.

What it doesn't tell: the engine code

The RDW gives no engine code. Yet that code decides how much oil goes in, which specification the oil needs and which filters and spark plugs fit. The same model can come with several engines in the same year.

That is why we search our own parts base for the engine that matches capacity, power and year. That engine comes with the oil capacity in litres, the specification and the part numbers of the filters and spark plugs.

Several engines, or none

Sometimes several engines match the same data. You then see a short list with capacity, power and years, with the price of a small service for each engine, and choose yourself. Then the price fits the engine you really have.

If your engine isn't in the list, we show an estimate based on a comparable engine. That is clearly marked. If you don't have a Dutch number plate, choose make, model, fuel and engine by hand. Not sure? Send us your number plate via WhatsApp and we will look it up for you.

Electric and hybrid

An electric car has no engine oil. The calculator then shows the cabin filter and the brake fluid. A hybrid has an ordinary combustion engine next to the electric motor, and that engine does have oil, an oil filter and, on petrol, spark plugs. Even if that engine runs less, the oil ages over time. So follow your car's service schedule. The same goes for a plug-in hybrid.

It remains an indication

All prices in the calculator are an indication including VAT. In the workshop we check the oil and its specification once more before it goes in. If the original part number isn't in our range, we show an equivalent alternative.

What the calculator can't see is the condition of your car: wear, a leak or a part that is seized. If the final price differs by more than 10 % from the indication, we call you first.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I sometimes have to choose my engine?

The RDW gives no engine code. If several engines match capacity, power and year, you choose. For each engine you see the price of a small service.

I have a foreign number plate. Does the calculator work?

Yes. Choose make, model, fuel and engine by hand. If in doubt, send us the details via WhatsApp.

Do you store my number plate?

No. It only goes to the RDW and into the WhatsApp message you send yourself.

Is the calculator price final?

No, it is an indication including VAT. If the final price differs by more than 10 %, we call you first.
