OBD readout vs. brand-specific diagnostics: what is the difference?

„It has been read out and nothing came up." We hear that sentence regularly from customers driving around with a persistent problem. Usually it is even true — it just says less than people think. A universal readout and factory diagnostics are two very different things.

What is an OBD-2 readout?

OBD-2 (On-Board Diagnostics, second generation) is a legally mandated, standardised connection. Every car built after roughly 2001 (petrol) or 2004 (diesel) has the same socket under the dashboard and speaks the same language there. That is precisely its strength and its limitation.

The standard exists to monitor one thing: emissions. What you read out via OBD-2 are standardised engine and emissions-related fault codes — the well-known P-codes — plus a handful of live values such as engine speed, coolant temperature and lambda readings. A cheap scanner off the internet does that perfectly well.

What OBD-2 does not do: tell you anything about the dozens of other control units in a modern car.

What does a brand-specific system actually see?

All control units, not just the engine

A present-day car quickly has 30 to 80 control units. The engine is one of them. Beyond that there are modules for the automatic gearbox, ABS and stability control, airbags, seat belt pretensioners, electric power steering, comfort systems, door modules, climate control, parking sensors, cameras, driver assistance, lighting, immobiliser and infotainment.

All of those modules keep their own fault memory. With a factory system we read them one by one. A complaint such as „sometimes the rear wiper does not work" or „the airbag light comes on now and then" simply is not part of the OBD-2 standard — so you will find nothing there.

Coding and adaptation

An OBD scanner reads and clears. Nothing more. With a factory system we can write: register a replaced control unit with the car, give a new sensor the correct basic setting, adapt a throttle body or DPF counter, register a replaced battery so the charging management is correct.

This is not a luxury. A new battery that has not been registered is treated incorrectly by the charging system and demonstrably has a shorter life. A throttle body without adaptation gives an uneven idle.

Service resets and maintenance registration

On many makes, switching off the service light can no longer be done with a button combination. On some makes the completed maintenance is also recorded in the car itself — including date and mileage. That requires the right system.

An example from practice

A car comes in with a complaint: now and then the cruise control drops out and the dashboard briefly goes dark. The universal scanner reports: no fault codes. Logically so — there is nothing wrong with the engine.

Using the factory system we read out all modules and find, in the body control module, a series of voltage dips plus a communication fault between two modules on the data bus. That points to one place: a corroding connector in a wiring harness. Without that full readout it would have been guesswork.

When do you need which diagnosis?

An OBD-2 readout is enough for an illuminated engine warning light with a clear, reproducible engine management complaint — a faulty lambda sensor, for instance.

Factory diagnostics are necessary for: complaints outside the engine (airbag, ABS, comfort, electric windows, lighting), faults that occur only occasionally, complaints that produced „nothing" during an earlier readout, and always when a control unit or sensor has to be replaced.

Frequently asked questions

I bought my own OBD scanner. Is it any use?

Certainly, for a first impression when the engine warning light comes on. Just bear in mind that you only see the engine side, and that a fault code indicates where the system measures a deviation — not automatically which component is broken.

Can clearing fault codes do any harm?

Clearing without fixing the cause solves nothing: the code comes back. More annoying is that you throw away the history that is valuable when tracing the fault. And just before an APK, clearing is pointless — the tester can see that the readiness monitors have not completed.

Are you an official dealer?

What does brand-specific diagnostics cost?

That depends on the scope: a targeted readout takes less time than tracing a fault that only shows up occasionally. You receive a clear quote in advance.
