Strange electrical faults — often a single bad earth

Measuring voltage drop across an earth connection

Your rear light flickers along with the indicator. The radio cuts out when you brake. There are fault codes in three systems that have nothing to do with each other. Sounds like three problems, but usually it is one: the car can no longer find a clean route back to the negative terminal.

What an earth connection does

In a car, current runs through a cable to a consumer and back to the battery through the bodyshell. That return path is the earth. In dozens of places a bolted connection joins cable to body. Rust, dirt or a bolt not properly tightened after a repair makes such a connection resistive.

The consequence is treacherous: the connection still works, just not well enough. At low current everything seems fine; as soon as something heavy joins in — a heated screen, a cooling fan, the starter motor — the voltage sags and other systems start behaving oddly.

Typical symptoms

  • Lights flickering or dimming when you switch something else on.
  • The radio or display resetting on starting or braking.
  • Several unrelated fault codes at once, often described as "voltage too low" or "implausible signal".
  • A wiper motor or fan running slower than it should.
  • Starting problems that come and go — see also car won't start.

Why replacing parts goes wrong here

A control unit receiving an unreliable signal logs a fault code against the sensor. Replace that sensor and nothing changes, because the cause was in the earth. Plenty of good parts have been replaced that way. So with illogical fault patterns we first measure the voltage drop: how much voltage is lost across a connection that should cost nothing at all? Where these connections fail most often

  • The main earth from engine block to bodyshell — it vibrates and gets hot.
  • Earth points in the boot and near the rear lights: moisture gets in here.
  • Earths behind a bumper or in a wheel arch, where road salt reaches them.
  • Points disconnected during an earlier repair or accident and refitted without being cleaned properly.

What we do

We first read out all control units — a fault pattern spread across several systems is itself a clue. Then we measure voltage drop across the suspect connections under load, because that is exactly when a bad earth gives itself away. The repair is usually simple: open the connection, clean the contact face back to bare metal, treat it against corrosion and torque it correctly. Cheaper than the three parts that would otherwise have been replaced.
