Your car failed the APK — what happens next
A failed APK feels like a problem, but in practice it is mostly a to-do list with a deadline. If you tackle things in the right order, it is usually sorted within a few days — often without taking a second day off work. This is the plan we recommend to our customers, in plain English.
Step 1 — Read the report calmly
The inspection report lists exactly what was rejected and what is only advisory. That distinction determines your costs and your urgency: only the rejection points must be repaired before the re-test. We explain every line of the report in "How to read the inspection report".
Step 2 — Work out whether you may still drive
Two situations:
- The old APK is still valid. Then in principle you may keep driving until the expiry date — at your own risk, because you now know about the defect. With a safety-critical point (brakes, steering, tyres worn to the cords) we advise leaving the car parked.
- The APK has already expired. Then the car no longer belongs on public roads; you risk a fine and an argument with your insurer. Driving is only allowed to a booked inspection appointment.
Step 3 — Get a quote based on the report
You don't need to come in first: a photo of the report via WhatsApp is enough for us to assess the points and give you a clear quote. No surprises afterwards — we replace nothing without your approval up front. Where a point can have several causes (for example "excessive play"), we will tell you honestly that the final diagnosis happens on the lift.
Step 4 — Have the rejection points repaired
We repair all common rejection points in our own workshop: brakes, suspension and steering components, lights, tyres, exhausts, welding on load-bearing parts and the faults behind an illuminated engine warning light. Common repairs are often finished the same day, provided parts are in stock. Bring the report — it is our work list.
Step 5 — The re-inspection
After the repairs, the car goes for its re-test at an RDW-approved test centre — we do not carry out the inspection itself; our job is making sure the car passes it. Mind the practical deadline: many centres charge a lower rate if the re-test takes place within a short period after the first inspection, so don't plan the repairs too far ahead.
Step 6 — Avoid the next rejection
Most rejection points announce themselves well in advance. Two habits will save you money next year: run through our APK checklist shortly before the test, and book an APK preparation two to four weeks before the expiry date.
